Fedora 8 + XFS + Nvidia + Java = Doom
Got a terrible scare on my MacBook Pro. After several crashes apparently caused by the combination of the nvidia kernel module and Sun JDK 6, my XFS root filesystem was corrupted.

In order to restore, I had to do the following:

  1. boot from the Fedora 8 DVD in rescue mode
  2. Fedora reports it can't find any Linux partitions and gives me a shell prompt.
  3. Run lvm vgscan -a y because for some reason the LV that holds my root partition is set to "inactive"!
  4. Attempt to mount /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 on /mnt/sysimage, fails!
  5. Run xfs_check /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 get told it's toasted
  6. Run xfs_repair -L /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 to force abandoning of the corrupted log metadata
  7. Watch with dismay as many many things are "fixed"
  8. reboot
